cassandra predicts

Natural gas is replacing oil as the mainstay of our prolific energy consumption. American autos and locomotives will mostly be powered by natgas over 20 years, with the changeover beginning now.

Natgas is a cleaner fuel than gasoline, so will be better. But in the end, we'll decide the price of extracting gas mainly through fracking demands too high an environmental price, and will complete the full transition to reliance on 100% renewable sources of electrical energy to power everything.

Whether we'll be able in an era of electricity to maintain a rough approximation of the way we're living now is another question.
