compounding the crime

21-Year-old Emily Henochowicz lost her left eye yesterday when she was shot in the face with a tear gas canister fired directly at her by an Israeli soldier.

The American art student was participating in a rally at the Qalandiya checkpoint in the West Bank, to show solidarity with the passengers detained in the Israeli commando attack on the relief flotilla headed for Gaza night before last, during which nine were murdered. Uniformed Zionist thugs fired volleys of tear gas projectiles at the Palestinian and international protesters peacefully standing at the checkpoint, causing mass panic and a stampede.

“They clearly saw us,” said Sören Johanssen, a Swedish (protester) standing with Henochowicz. “They clearly saw that we were internationals and it really looked as though they were trying to hit us. They fired many canisters at us in rapid succession. One landed on either side of Emily, then the third one hit her in the face.”

Henochowicz underwent two surgeries last night at Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem. The bones around her eye socket, her cheekbone, and her left jaw were all fractured. Three metal plates were embedded in her head and face, and her jaw is now wired shut.

The demonstration at Qalandiya was one of several that occurred in the West Bank yesterday, as outrage over the violent Israeli boarding of the relief flotilla, which took place in international waters, continues to grow. Every country on earth except the U.S. has vigorously and unambiguously condemned the unprovoked attack.

Jonathan Schwarz, proprietor of the blog ATinyRevolution.com posted the link to Emily's blog. She's a student at the Cooper Union Art Institute, in Manhattan's East Village.
