Paul Krugman has a Crackerjack™ column at the Times from a couple days ago, about the Republican war on food stamps.
The Snap Program, as it's called these days, is one of the big reasons, along with Social Security and Unemployment insurance, that our "Great Recession" didn't sink to the level of the Great Depression.
But the program helps poor people, and our political and financial elites won't stand for that. Their treatment of the poor has now progressed from callous indifference to something that's not even human.
krugman is a partisan who blames the Republicans for this, and it's not hard to do considering the rage-fueled heartlessness of that scurvy crew. However, I blame the Democrats nearly as much, as enablers of this predatory policy whose purpose is income redistribution, taking food out of the mouths of hungry children and passing the money saved on to the top 0.1% of income earners.
Will Obama use food stamps as a bargaining chip in his ongoing attempts to achieve the Big Compromise that Will Settle Everything Forever? Stay tuned...we'll have lots more, right after these important messages.
